About This Ride
What makes this route special
There's a signboard at 19,024 feet that says you've reached the world's highest motorable road. It's not the signboard you'll remember though — it's what the ride to get there looks like. The eastern Ladakh circuit via Hanle and Umling La is the route serious riders dream about. You cross the Indus, push deep into the Trans-Himalayan plateau where the landscape looks more like Tibet than India, and eventually top out at an altitude where commercial aircraft cruise. Tso Moriri on the way back is a quiet reward — a high-altitude lake that rarely sees crowds, ringed by 6,000m peaks, where bar-headed geese land like it's nothing. Eight days, one extraordinary loop.
