Tawang sits in the far northwest corner of Arunachal Pradesh, sharing a border with China and Bhutan, and the road to get there is half the attraction. From Guwahati you climb through Assam's tea gardens into the forests of Arunachal, through Bomdila's chortens, over the dramatic Sela Pass at 13,700 ft (where the wind can knock you sideways), and finally into Tawang — a town of monks, prayer flags, and a 400-year-old monastery that sits above the clouds.
